James McIntosh Patrick OBE; RSA (1907-98)
Bridge on the Knapp Road
Provenance; Private collection, purchased from the artist.
Exhibited; Dundee Museum and Art Gallery, ‘McIntosh Patrick – An 80th Birthday Tribute’ 1987.
This subject sits within an area which was a favourite location for McIntosh Patrick, lying less than 5 miles to the west of his hometown of Dundee on the Carse of Gowrie farmlands. Patrick was passionate about capturing the essence of the Angus and Perthshire landscape, and took pride in his knowledge of flora and fauna, and especially trees. This superb and very old oak tree intrigued him, particularly the extraordinarily heavy bow which seemed to defy gravity as it spanned the burn. Nearly 50 years on from when it was painted this majestic tree has finally yielded to the ravages of time.
