John Mackie was born in Glasgow in 1953, although today he lives in Yorkshire.
After a travelling scholarship in America and Canada, he lived and painted in Italy and France where he was inspired by the landscape and cities around Tuscany, Umbria and Chianti and Venice. In France, he spent time in Paris where he discovered the wealth of material in the everyday scenes around café’s and bistros, especially around the districts beside Place du Tetre and the Champs Elysees.
However, as with many others, it was in Languedoc in the South of France where John Mackie felt his greatest pull. His attraction to the cities of Terrasson, Montpelleier, Bezier and Narbonne still feature prominently in his artistic output today.
