Born in Cumbria, 1972, April Young is a sculptor producing one-off figurative ceramic forms. The Horse: Her early and still recurring fascination centred on the horse, both as a form and its role within a diversity of cultures both ancient and modern.
Mythology: her latest pieces are influenced by stories, and express visual narratives related to folklore and mythology. Traditional views of epic dramas are subverted by a modern take, producing a tone of humour and sensitivity inherent in the composition.
Occasionally her work delves into the generic use of animal imagery, particularly in fables, and how this is used to express the human condition.
The pieces are hand-built in stoneware and fired several times to incorporate various combinations of glazes, lustre’s and outdoor firing practices. Each piece is entirely unique.
April’s work is sold worldwide through an established list of galleries and exhibition venues
